Tips for Visitors
Plan evenings around lantern districts, expect road closures in major cities, and avoid revealing clothing during temple visits.
Vesak is the most important Buddhist religious observance in Sri Lanka, commemorating the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and passing away. Sri Lanka Tourism notes that roads fill with lanterns, pandals, and temporary alms stalls offering food and drink to passers-by. Unlike a single-location festival, Vesak is best experienced as a national mood spread across cities, neighborhoods, and temples. Colombo, Kandy, and many provincial towns all stage memorable displays after dark.
