Sri Lanka Visa Requirements
Most short-stay visitors need ETA approval in advance through Sri Lanka's official immigration system.
Core rule
ETA approval is the normal path for tourism and business short stays. The official ETA site states that approved travelers are issued a 30-day short-visit visa at the port of entry, and that the stay can be extended for up to six months.
What to prepare
- 1.Passport — valid for at least 6 months from date of entry
- 2.ETA approval — keep a copy of the ETA approval or application reference
- 3.Return or onward details — airlines or border officials may ask for proof
- 4.Accommodation details — first-night address and contact information are useful to have ready
Practical notes
ETA exemptions:Sri Lanka's official ETA site lists Singapore, Maldives, and Seychelles as exempt from the ETA requirement for short visits.
Fee exemptions: Sri Lanka Immigration states that, from October 15, 2025, tourism ETA fees are waived for passport holders of China, India, Russia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan, while ETA approval still applies.
Extensions: The official ETA site says the initial 30-day visit may be extended for up to six months.
Use the official portal: Apply through eta.gov.lk rather than third-party lookalike services.
