Where to Try

Guesthouses, breakfast buffets, and family-run curry houses across Sri Lanka.

String hoppers, or indi appa, are among the most versatile staples in Sri Lankan kitchens. Sri Lanka Tourism describes them as rice-flour dough pressed into thin strands, steamed into small nests, and typically served with dhal, potato curry, meat or fish curry, and coconut sambol. They are lighter than roti and often appear in larger shared spreads. Travelers will meet them in guesthouses, railway-town cafes, and family-run restaurants throughout the island.
