Neighborhood

Kataragama

Kataragama is one of Sri Lanka's most important pilgrimage towns and draws a notably mixed devotional crowd. The shrine complex is associated with Skanda or Kataragama Deviyo and becomes especially intense during the Esala season, when vows, processions, and acts of penance shape the atmosphere. What makes the site important for travelers is not monumental architecture alone but the visible coexistence of multiple religious traditions. A visit works best in the evening, when ritual life gathers momentum.
