Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple is one of the island's most impressive Buddhist complexes. UNESCO describes it as a sacred pilgrimage site for more than twenty-two centuries and the best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka, with five sanctuaries, extensive murals, and 157 statues. The caves are still active devotional spaces, so the best visit balances art-historical interest with respect for worshippers. Morning visits are usually cooler and quieter than midday climbs.
