The standard Adam's Peak climb starts at Nallathanniya (Dalhousie) and follows a stepped, lit pilgrimage path of about 7 kilometers each way to the summit shrine at 2,243 meters. Most pilgrims and visitors leave between 1 and 3 a.m. to reach the top before dawn, both for the sunrise and for the famous shadow of the peak cast onto cloud below. The climb is physically demanding but technically straightforward: roughly 5,500 steps with regular tea stalls. Outside the December-to-May season the lights and shrine are closed and weather is unsettled.
