Overview

Sri Lanka's festival calendar is shaped by full-moon poya days, Buddhist pilgrimage seasons, Hindu observances, and national family holidays. Dates for lunar festivals shift each year, so use month ranges for early planning and confirm exact dates before booking.

Major Seasons

April: Sinhala and Tamil New Year

Sinhala and Tamil New Year is family-centered and affects transport, shops, and accommodation. Book ahead and expect a slower national rhythm around April 13-14.

May and June: Vesak and Poson

Vesak is the biggest Buddhist full-moon observance, with lanterns, pandals, temple visits, and dansal food stalls. Poson Poya is especially important around Mihintale and Anuradhapura.

July/August: Perahera Season

Kandy Esala Perahera is the country's most famous procession festival. Kataragama Esala Festival has a different mood, centered on pilgrimage vows and multi-religious devotion.

October/November: Deepavali

Deepavali is observed by Sri Lankan Tamil Hindu communities with lamps, temple worship, sweets, and family gatherings.

Planning Notes

  • Book Kandy accommodation months ahead for Perahera.
  • Avoid treating pilgrimage acts as performances; many rituals are intimate and devotional.
  • For poya days, expect alcohol sales restrictions and heavier temple crowds.
  • Confirm exact dates from official calendars before finalizing flights.
