Little Adam's Peak

Little Adam's Peak is the easiest good view in Sri Lanka. It rises to about 1,141 metres on the eastern side of Ella, in the Badulla District of Uva Province, and it takes 45 minutes to an hour from the road.

The name

It is named for its resemblance to Sri Pada / Adam's Peak, the pilgrimage mountain far to the west — the same conical profile at a fraction of the height. There is no pilgrimage here and no relic; the name is purely a matter of shape.

The walk

The path leaves the Ella–Passara road and runs level for most of its length through working tea estate, which is much of the pleasure of it — you will pass pluckers at work on a weekday morning. A final flight of steps climbs to the summit ridge, where three successive high points are linked by a short scramble. The gain is modest, the path is well made, and it is comfortably within reach of anyone who walks.

The view

The ridge gives a full circle. South and west the ground falls away through Ella Gap towards the southern plain — on a clear day you can see all the way to the coast. Across the valley stands Ella Rock, the harder and longer of the two Ella hikes. Behind, the tea slopes run up towards the highlands.

When to go

First light, without qualification. The gap fills with cloud through the morning and the view goes; the path is also unshaded once the sun is up. Sunrise here is the single best hour in Ella, and it is busy for that reason.
