First-Time Cultural Triangle Itinerary
A practical route linking Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy for a first Sri Lanka heritage trip.

Overview
Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle works best when it is paced as a cluster rather than rushed as a sequence of isolated monuments. The core route links Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple, and Kandy.
Suggested Route
Days 1-2: Sigiriya and Dambulla
Base near Sigiriya or Dambulla. Climb Sigiriya early before heat builds, then visit Dambulla Cave Temple when the light softens and the rock is cooler.
Days 3-4: Anuradhapura
Give Anuradhapura a full day. The distances are broad, and the city is both archaeological and devotional. Prioritize the major dagobas, the monastic ruins, and Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.
Day 5: Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa is compact enough for a focused cycling or driver-assisted day. Start early, then end near Parakrama Samudra for late light.
Days 6-7: Kandy
Finish in Kandy with the lake, museums, and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. If timing matches July or August, plan far ahead for Kandy Esala Perahera.
Tips
- Start major archaeological visits early; the dry-zone heat is real.
- Carry socks for temple floors and modest clothing for shrine areas.
- Do not try to make Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa a single day unless you only want highlights.
- Use Kandy as a slower cultural finish rather than a quick transit stop.
